Barrier Integrity: Live & Wireless

During a P&A operation, an unknown obstruction blocked access to the planned deep barrier depth, and gauge communication would be lost once the Xmas tree was removed. A shallow barrier was set with Interwell's ABVS wireless monitoring system, transmitting live pressure data from below the barrier until the BOP was nippled up.

Challenge

The original pre-P&A scope included setting a deep barrier, cutting the tubing, displacing the well fluids and installing a shallow barrier. However, an unknown obstruction prevented access to the planned setting depth. In addition, communication with the existing downhole gauge would be lost when the Xmas tree was removed, resulting in limited visibility below the barrier during a critical phase of the P&A operation.

Solution

The scope was revised to establish a shallow well barrier incorporating the Acoustic Barrier Verification System (ABVS) wireless monitoring system as a compensating measure. A wireless downhole transmitter was installed below the shallow barrier, enabling continuous transmission of live pressure data to the surface while the Xmas tree was removed and until the BOP had been fully nippled up.

The ABVS system maintained continuous visibility below the barrier during a period when conventional downhole monitoring was unavailable.This allowed the operation to proceed with improved well-control assurance, reduced operational uncertainty and real-time verification of barrier integrity throughout the critical transition from Xmas tree removal to BOP installation.
